Sampan Seafood Restaurant, Lamma Island, Hong Kong

For my first week day in Hong Kong I wanted to head out to one of the outlying islands, Lamma Island. It’s probably been 25 years since I’d gone on a day trip to Lamma Island with my parents while I was still in school.

Lamma Island is a short ferry ride from the Central Ferry Terminal and arrives at Yung Shue Wan pier on Lamma Island.

Once you’ve disembarked its a short walk along the waterfront to the township. Along this path are a number of restaurants with open air dining areas that overlook the bay – it’s a very scenic and tranquil place but I can imagine that the weekends would be absolutely hectic.

Holiday Inn, Suva, Fiji

Sometimes life can be difficult, like the 3 days I had to spend in Fiji. Going to a tropical paradise where it’s 30 degrees everyday and things happen on “Island Time” is just so hard to take.

Upon the landing of my delayed Fiji Airways flight from Sydney I found myself negotiating with the taxi driver at Suva airport to get me to my hotel. I’d been warned by a colleague not to pay more than F$30 to get to the hotel. The first offer was for F$40 which I scoffed at and offered F$30 in return which was accepted. I later learned that I probably could have offered F$25 and still got my ride.

And so I found myself pulling up to the Suva Holiday Inn after the bumpy taxi ride from the airport to be welcomed with a hearty Bula!

Ba Dao Guan, Chinatown, Singapore

In the middle of the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s Chinatown area is a great little restaurant called Ba Dao Guan or Sichuan Seafood Restaurant. Don’t let the name put you off if you’re not a seafood fan as there is a lot of non-seafood dishes on the menu.
