At the south of the northern island of Hakkaido is a small city called Hakodate. It’s the closest city to the Shinkansen terminal which is about 30 minutes by train away.
Hakodate was opened to foreign trade in 1859 by the 1858 treaty with the US.

The rain cleared long enough for me to jump on a tram to head to a brewpub that I had spotted the day before. From JR Hakodate station its a 2 stop tram ride followed by a short walk to get to the location.

Lucky Pierrot is a local chain of hamburger restaurants in Hakodate that seems to have a huge following. Around lunchtime on a very, very wet day I jumped on the tram and ended up in Honcho and made the quick walk to the Honcho branch of Lucky Pierrot.
